Our Program

The Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation (LLTF) is designing a new program to support and encourage playwriting in NYC.  Lucille Lortel was a champion of new plays and new playwrights and this program would enrich her legacy of support and encouragement for the next generation of playwrights.

New York City residents in New York City Public Schools would be invited to submit their plays to the LLTF.   Plays would then be read by a group of readers who would move forward plays of merit.  A separate selection committee (independent of the LLTF Board) would review the finalist’s plays and select one playwright from each of New York City’s five boroughs as a winner of the competition.

Once the winners are selected, the LLTF would pair each playwright with a professional playwright.  These playwright mentors would work with each playwright to help the winner refine their play.

A professional director would be paired with each playwright and, along with a group of professional actors, the playwright would be given a short rehearsal period followed by a one time reading of their play at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.  These readings would be open to the public and all tickets would be free.  There may also be a small scholarship awarded to the winners.
